Van Oldenborgh documents life in a street in the centre of Rio de Janeiro.
The footage was shot on black-andwhite super8 film and is presented uncut.
In this film, which has been edited into a loop, the atmosphere is defined by the difference between life and death. A man lies motionless on the pavement next to a lamppost with arms outstretched. It is almost impossible not to interpret the scene in the light of more familiar images. The pose of the man is reminiscent of a Jesus figure, but also of images of war casualties. The camera remains fixed on the scene without distractions. And then a passer-by appears. He sways drunkenly along the pavement and stops beside the lying figure. He pauses hesitant, and then with a resolute gesture he steps off the pavement and out of the frame.
