Magical Square, 1992
Karel Martens playful experiments with numbers led to a series of works based on Vedic mathematics. Instead of found objects Martens used his mono print technique with stencil numbers printed in the configuration of the ‘magical square’ on the stock exchange pages of different newspapers. The first work in these series was made in 1992 and led in 2011 to an evocation of the ‘magical square’ in color. This first work is still available.
Please check also in his Bio the video Karel Martens from the ‘Dutch Profiles series’. Here he explains more about this specific work series.
