Magical Square, 1992-2011

Karel Martens playful experiments with numbers led to a series of works based on Vedic mathematics. Instead of found objects Martens used his mono print technique with stencil numbers printed in the configuration of the ‘magical square’ on the stock exchange pages of different newspapers. One of the latest in these series – which already started in 1992 – led to an evocation of the  ‘magical square’ in color. Please check also in his Bio the video Karel Martens from the ‘Dutch Profiles series’. Here he explains more about this specific work series.
